*starting a business?
one school of thought would say that you should start with as close to zero investment or outgoings as possible. the more gradually you grow your business, the more you learn about it, helping to avoid the development of "blind spots" that could eventually turn out to be major gaps in your business strategy. e.g. the major growth of the service sector in the last twenty years seems to have ommitted the concept of real service to the customer. this ethos has resulted in a lack of ethics with the subsequent downfall of companies such as enron in the US. it is currently responsible for the major shake-up that the irish banking system is experiencing.
* what is good business?
newcorkcity is, among many other things about good business sense. ncc defines good business sense as actually giving a ha'penny about your customers.
how do managers of big companies promote customer service? the first step is to improve staff relations. you can't ask your staff to treat customers well if you don't treat them well, can you?
* what is the law?
the law is an attempt to formulate good practice for a society in order to protect that society. unfortunately this "good practice" is continuously subverted by unscrupulous individuals who attempt to test its limitations so that the law is then used to subjugate the very people it was designed to protect. when this happens, new legislation must be drafted. when the society doesn't question the reasoning behind the law, the law becomes the master of the society instead of the other way around.
*some business ideas: set up websites for weddings in the region that you live. it would be important to make it local and personal, otherwise you'll be just like all the other guys.
*greed is dead
(or is at least mortally injured) why? it has a lot to do with communication. we now have more control over our lives than we ever dreamed we'd have. the middle man is no longer of use when we can market things ourselves.
the small guy has far more power to be successful. with the internet, mobile phones, and tv news the small guy has the information he needs to make it.
a new level of customer expectation is rapidly developing. customers expect to be treated well. if they aren't, they walk- simple as that.

SOME IDEAS FOR MAKING LIFE EASIER
26.07.2005: DEFEAT YOUR ENEMIES:
if you want to defeat your enemies, the following are a short cut to success:
a. place your ego to one side (and consistently keep it there)
b. know exactly what you wish to achieve
c. be extremely patient and respectful with yourself and your opponent as you slowly achieve your aims- forget about having an end date
d. overestimate rather than underestimate your opponents abilities, and remember that they may be totally right in what they are doing, though it may not seem like it to you at the time
e. always treat your enemy as if they were some day going to be your friend
f. don't get upset about making mistakes along the way.... its part of the process
03.07.2005: need to obtain service from a big company quickly? don't call up customer services- call the manager
13.06.2005; solve problems more quickly- teach yourself to be your own devils advocate by deciding to consistently look at the opposite point of view to your own. keep practising until it becomes second nature. excruciatingly uncomfortable to do but worth achieving, this can seriously enhance your problem solving skills.
10.06.2005: reason cannot be bounded by laws. laws only follow reason, they do not control reason. laws are static entities dreamt up by man. reason is a dynamic entity dreamt up by a force more powerul than any one man or group of men.
31.05.2005: want to know what the banks think about you? check out your credit rating:
1. call the irish credit bureau on 012600388
2. give them your name and address to send an application form.
3. fill in the application form, enclosing the €6 postal order fee and send it to the icb address.
(the icb website seems to have been taken down recently for some reason, and the reg. forms cannot be downloaded.)
30.05.2005: stuck in a rut? want to break out of it? take one thing that you always do when you are like this and do the EXACT opposite. e.g. if you are sitting in front of the pc feeling bored and wondering why you can't get your work done, then get the hell away from the pc even for 5 minutes. it could transform your day.
27.05.2005: saving on mobile bill charges- assess the amount of time you are on the phone by accessing your time counter:
on a nokia press menu>call register>scroll to call duration. here you can view your total call duration since you reset it last. how to reset? go to "clear timers" and type in the code "12345" (if a code is requested)- note: to find this information is tricky. your mobile company won't give it to you......... why i wonder..............?
